Burbank Wood Roof Ordinance

In 1992, the City of Burbank adopted an ordinance prohibiting wood shakes and wood shingles as exterior wall and roof coverings. The ordinance required wood shingle and shake roofs in the mountain fire zone to be removed by 2005. In the rest of the City, wood shingle and shake roof shall be removed by August 14, 2012.

As the 20 year deadline approaches, Building Division would like to make property owners aware of the ordinance and what they can do if their roofs have wood shingles or wood shakes.
  • The ordinance applies to the roof covering. While all roofs have wood sheathing and rafters underneath, the term "wood roof" in the ordinance refers to the shingles or shakes that are made from wood.
  • The ordinance requires wood shingles and shake to be removed and replaced, even if they have been covered with another type of shingle.
  • A Building Permit is required for new roofs and re-roofs.
  • After the permit has been obtained, the roof will have to be inspected at two stages by Building Division staff. The nailing of the sheathing is inspected before the roof paper is applied, and the job is inspected at completion.
Be Cool. Many consumers have found that lighter color roofs result in reduced energy bills, longer roof life, and reduced air cooling loads. And, white or "cool" roofs can help to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
